The Handicraft Atelier (Shilpashala) was launched at Jnana-Pravaha on the 1st of June 2008 with the aim to preserve and promote the fast-diminishing traditional art and craft of the ancient city of Varanasi. Once known for its unique and multifarious hand-made objects, the city is now left with a handful of artisans struggling for survival in the fast changing and challenging scenario. In fact, the craftsmen working with wood, clay, metal, paper, stone, etc. can now be counted on fingertips, which is certainly an alarming situation. The Institution, thus, decided to make an effort to encourage such artisans to come up with new creations. Required facilities are provided to motivate the young generation also to come forward and contribute in saving these dying traditional arts and crafts of Banaras. The artisans at the Jnana-Pravaha Handicraft Atelier are currently working under the supervision of Dr. Pramod Giri.
